Getting into OHIP Public Addiction Treatment
Marie* went to Leipzig Serenity Retreat in Saskatchewan. She didn’t say when she attended or how long she had remained sober post-treatment, but she relapsed. Marie also didn’t want to go to the AA meetings because she didn’t feel comfortable without the support of people like the LSR staff and alumni. She was worried about paying for treatment a second time if it didn’t work the first time. I asked her if she had made any effort to seek out a therapist or call the program back. She said I did a few times and then stopped. Since Marie’s current option seems to only be public treatment, we gave information on assessment offices, detox units, and residential treatment programs and told her that she needed to do her homework. This section covers OHIP funded treatment programs. To get into a government funded program there are set of steps that typically need to happen: You will need to be sober (A medically-supervised withdrawal unit is suggested for those with severe alcohol use and dependency). Once you are sober, book an appointment with a drug and alcohol counsellor at the closest local mental health and addiction office. The counsellor will likely (1) refer you to an outpatient program as an interim solution and (2) put you on a waitlist for a residential treatment program. Once wait listed, it is important to stay sober before your intake date (which could be weeks to months). This means going to peer-support meetings, attending outpatient therapy, keeping busy and not becoming idle (e.g. volunteering, going to the gym, or anything that will keep you occupied until it’s treatment time). Once in residential treatment, clients will spend their time in an intensified treatment program. With the pre-treatment sober time and new personal knowledge and understanding of coping, relapse prevention, and self-awareness, a person can hopefully return back home and learn to flourish in a life. It will be beneficial to research the programs you may be referred to. Here are some questions to consider asking to ensure your needs are met once you start treatment. Once you have answers to those basic questions. There are typically two options from this point: 1. This program isn’t going to work because you don’t like the sound of the program, the wait list is too long, or too expensive. So the next step is to call the next program. 2. You like this program and you start asking them the following questions. Addiction Treatment Programs with Strong Mental Health Components
Rob* called in for his 45-year-old sister, Sara*, at the end of August looking for treatment programs that would help her deal with mental health stability rather than abstinence. Sara has already attended Bellwood 4-5 times, which was covered by her employer (a county in Ontario). Sara is described as a binge drinker with anxiety, depression, and other mental health issues. She was recently disciplined for drinking on the job. The three major mental health programs in Ontario include: Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care in Penetanguishine CAMH Anxiety and Mood Disorders Inpatient Program in Toronto Meadow Creek Residential Treatment in Ottawa If the employer wanted to pay for private treatment again or if the family wanted to pay a fee, we recommended Joey Marcelli for intervention services and the Freedom from Addiction Recovery Home to keep her in...

Private Alcohol Treatment for 65-year-old Male
Joanna* called in to find addiction treatment resources for professionals in Ontario. She wanted to know about private and confidential programs that were going to help her 65-year-old husband struggling with alcohol dependency. Joanne said she had insurance, so we suggested she ask her provider to see if her insurance covers only “hospital facilities” or would allow him to seek other – specifically private – programs. INSURANCE PROGRAMS If Joanna’s insurance covers treatment, her husband will most likely attend to Homewood (Guelph) or Bellwood (Scarborough). These programs are the programs in Canada that have “hospital status” and meet the needs of insurance providers. We also gave Joanna links to private 12 Step, 12 Step Holistic, and non-12 Step treatment programs (see below) if her insurance does not cover her husband’s treatment. We also gave her links for alternatives to standard treatment resources such as private therapy, sober companionship, life coaching, and pharmaceutical intervention. NON 12 STEP RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMS SUNSHINE COAST HEALTH CENTER 2174 Fleury Road, Powell River, BC V8A 0H8 A private program for men that uses evidence based approaches and includes medically-supervised detoxification, masters-level therapists, on-site recreation (including indoor lap pool), psychiatric assessment, refresher courses (aftercare), online support (aftercare), family program, and couples program. 3 Men Needing Opioid Addiction Treatment
One caller, Harold*, called in for himself looking for a specific program in the Niagara Region. It took us a few minutes to realize he had been told that this was going to be the best program and it was someone else’s recommendation for treatment. We, then, determined several factors that let us help him a better way than just giving him the information he had called in for. Harold wanted a program to help him deal with an addiction to Heroin. He was already on a Suboxone program and wanted OHIP options. We told him all the steps he needed to take and then explained what he needed to do. As usual, we sent him a follow-up email outlining all the information we discussed. That’s not all though… After giving Harold the resources he needed, he asked how we could help his brother who was also addicted to Heroin but was, instead, on a methadone maintenance program. We said his brother would have a harder time finding treatment because many programs don’t accept clients using methadone, but would send him another, separate email detailing options available to his brother. It didn’t end here though… Harold proceeded to ask about available treatment to a friend in his circle who was not yet on Suboxone or methadone and was still smoking heroin. This was the easier person to provide treatment options for as he was not on any anti-craving drugs. There are more options available for people using only Heroin and not Suboxone or Methadone. LOCATION: BRAMPTON, ONTARIO Harold DOC: Suboxone PERSON: 26-year-old male REQUEST: Harold is looking for OHIP options for opioid addiction treatment and programs teaching coping techniques. Harold also wanted to get off Suboxone, which we gave him detox options for. We also suggested Harold talk with his prescribing doctor about tapering off Suboxone before or after treatment. We provided a list of programs that accept methadone clients and told Harold to also call the Drug and Alcohol Helpline (1.800.565.8603) to get a list of residential programs that are within his LHIN (Unlike Methadone, Suboxone usually is permitted to be administered in treatment programs). We also gave Harold information for the nearest assessment office and a list of questions to ask in order to gather the information he needs before he gets assessed/referred to a opioid treatment program. Harold’s Brother DOC: Methadone Harold wanted information for programs that could help his brother get off Methadone and treat his opioid addiction. We told Harold that the same information we provided to him would also help het his brother into treatment. However, Harold’s brother will have a harder time because of Methadone is less accepted treatment programs than Suboxone. We suggested, if Harold’s brother didn’t want to be on Methadone, that he start working with his prescribing Doctor to start tapering.
